Heroism

Heroism

This shirt really isn’t appropriate for me anymore, since I play the fake drums a lot more than I play the fake guitar these days. I bought it before Rock Band had come out, when there was still just Guitar Hero. I should probably have this one, instead. Still, I like the one I’m wearing today.

Purchase location: Penny Arcade Store
Purchase date: July 12, 2007.

You Have Died of Dysentery

An old one today. I bought this shirt over three years ago, and it’s still in good shape. American Apparel makes good stuff.

1up!

I’m running out of things to say when I post my new shirt every day. Also, the picture quality is getting pretty bad. I’m not sure why, but I always wake up late and am in a hurry to shoot it in the morning before going to work, so I’m not taking much time on them. Anyway, that’s today’s shirt.

Purchase location: 80s tees
Purchase date: October 3, 2007. The first one I’ve worn so far this month that wasn’t bought in 2008.

Day 15

Wow, am I really halfway through the month already?

Early post for me today. In about an hour, I’m carpooling up to the bay area for a friend’s housewarming. He left my company earlier this year to go work at Google. I expect I won’t have much time later to just sit around at a computer to post, so I figured I’d get it out of the way now. Aside from driving, today will likely be spent playing a bunch of board games and probably some Rock Band. He has RB2, so I’ll finally get to see and try out the new drum kit.

Last night, I beat Gears of War 2, playing co-op with my brother. I was playing on the Hardcore difficulty level. Afterwards, I tried playing on Insane for a little while. It’s really hard, but I expect I will eventually work my way through the game playing it. Already looking forward to GoW3.

That’s all I’ve got for you today. I should finish getting ready to go, and eat some breakfast.

Look ma, no face!

I should probably be going to sleep, but I’m not at all tired. I stayed up late last night playing Gears of War 2, and then woke up late today. A lot of today was spent doing the same, playing Gears 2. It’s a good game, but I feel like I’m going to get to the end too quickly, and then be disappointed that it’s done. The achievements and online co-op (as well as the Insane difficulty level) will add some replay value. Now that I really think about it, I’m sure I’ll play it a whole lot more. There are also some other online cooperative modes that I don’t know too much about yet.

Last night before going to bed, I hung up my framed puzzle. Gluing it together was a little strange, but worked very well.

I don’t really have much else right now. Posting every day is a bit difficult when I have nothing at all to say.

Day 9

Spent most of the day today playing Gears of War 2. Yesterday after work was pretty much the same. I also glued my puzzle together and framed it yesterday. It’s getting hung up when I can pull myself away from GoW2 tonight… or maybe now, since my power just went out to cut of my online co-op game. Once it’s up, I’ll take a real picture of the framed puzzle.

My plan for tomorrow is more of the same. Fun game.

Emergence Day

My first experience with Amazon’s Release-Date Delivery appears to have been a success. According to UPS, Gears of War 2 has been delivered. It should be waiting for me at home when I get there. My weekend will probably be a lot of GoW2, and not much else. It’s been a while since I spent a whole weekend just gaming.

I guess I’ll need to take a little time out from that to make sure I keep posting here every day.

Not really much else to say today. I’ll try to do better tomorrow.

Day 6

What was I thinking making two posts yesterday? If I’m going to succeed in posting every day this month, I probably need to save them up. Today, I’m not really coming up with much to write about. The election is over, there’s no baseball… what am I going to do?

Gears of War 2 comes out tomorrow. I’m looking forward to that. My copy is coming from Amazon, with release-date delivery. I’m also getting the Lancer because… well, just because. It will arrive sometime next week.

I ordered a bunch of Arduino stuff from the Maker Shed. I don’t really know what I’m going to do with it yet, but I want to be prepared for those times I want to make some random electronic thing. Like a Rickroll pumpkin, for example. I got the idea to order this stuff from my brother.

Congratulations to Darren and Lindsay on the birth of Zachary Rhys!

And now, here it is, your moment of zen:

(My favorite comment, via BBG: “What? There was a video game in there?”)

…and for my next trick…

I had a lot of fun with the RRoD pumpkin, but as I said in that post I really wanted to make the middle green like it was supposed to be. Some empty Sprite bottles, a plastic cup, and some tape later… problem solved:

There’s some video of it blinking here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Rd8pvUZAfg.

Also, I wanted something vaguely scary/Halloween related, so I made one with a Gears of War logo. GoW2 next week!
Gears of War

I said I had big plans for another Halloween pumpkin, and those weren’t it. I now present the Rick-ro-lantern. Hm, I may need to work on that name.

Video was shot with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX37.

I initially wanted to have the whole thing self-contained, but didn’t come up with the idea in time to do that by Halloween. Instead, I decided to put it in front of the window, with a speaker and webcam inside. I used Motion to detect movement with the camera, and then start the song playing. The camera didn’t see anything at all at night (even with the outdoor light on), so I went with the light you can see at the beginning of the video. It’s the only thing the camera can see, so when someone walks between it and the camera, the software sees it as movement.

My carving skills are fairly lacking, but it came out well enough, I guess. Need practice.

Here’s some more pictures of the process and setup:

You can see all the pictures, with a little bit of explanation on some of them, in the flickr set: http://flickr.com/photos/penner42/sets/72157608232548269/.
