Did you really think there was, or should be, a law against lying? Truth in advertising is mandatory, because someone may pay you as a result of what you say, but truth in speech has never been mandatory. Why should mass-produced speech have different requirements than interpersonal speech?
Now, I don’t think news organizations should make use of this often, if ever. But it’s a matter of professionalism and not of law.
